Title Blocks

I choose four different font for my magazine, i only picked the fonts that are suitable for the magazine or theme and for the title. I wanted the font to have a old school look.
Font 1 : Riesling
Font 2 : Neon Serif
Font 3: Disko
Font 4 : Neon 80's
The font that I picked for my magazine is Riesling, this is because it looks very unique and the font relates to my genre/theme of my magazine.

Original Article draft

Jazmine Sullivan has enjoyed what most of us could only ever dream of. still riding the wave of her last album success going platinum worldwide, she's been back in the studio working on her second album which is soon to be released. Soul Train has managed to interrupt her busy schedule and get an exclusive interview with the sultry songstress. Dressed in fitted blue jeans and a cream cashmere sweater complimented with her hair worn loose in her signature spirals curls, Jazmine Sullivan is the epitome of soulful harmony. She's relaxed and greets us with a smile as we sit down to talk about her new album, life as a soul artist and with her upcoming tour.

Describe your album in three words
Heart-rending, intense and powerful

What’s the name of this album and why did you named it this?
This album is called Us Against the World. I was in the studio one day writing lyrics for my album, I really hadn’t thought of an album name and so while I was writing I had deep feeling as I wrote down “and no one could ever take that away, Nothing could come between us” this made me feel like as if I was going against the world. That’s when I realised what my album should be called.

What was your inspiration for creating this album?
I think first of all I wanted to continue writing about my personal life and relating it to the listener. Then on a second thought I didn't want to be like my first album so I decided to listen to other pupil’s story and turn that into lyrics. So overall the inspiration really came from people that I spoke to for example I think who inspired me on this album was people. It's like every person’s story is something for us to cherish so I wanted to get it out there in a music way and influence people and for them to be proud.

Could you give us a background of Us Against the World?
Us Against the World is a storyline where each track has a story which is connected to the next. I dedicate this album to my fans because they are the ones who helped me fight my way to the top since there are all these mainstream singers and I’m different from them. It's really hard to make it to the top especially when you’re labelled as a soul artist. If you think about it there are so many soul artists but there’s only a small amount of known soul artist.

What track are you going to release as your first single?
This is the part where you have to wait for single to come out, it's a surprise. In this album are you collaborating with anyone? To be honest, I don't want to tell! I’ll just give you small clues. So in this album there will be collaboration with Maxwell and Lauryn Hill. I might be collaborating with J.COLE.

Will this album be different to your first album?
Well, I guess it will be a mixture because my first album was all about my personal life but in this album there will be one or two tracks which are personal and the others tracks will be in third person.

What’s the hardest part about this music industry?
I guess that when you’re a singer you have so many things to do; you have to work nearly 24/7. Travelling to different countries for interviews, it’s not as easy as you think it is but I guess it’s worth it because you put so much effort and hard work to be successful.

Have you always enjoyed the art of soul music?
Yes, because my whole life I’ve been brought up listening to Motown which has amazing soul artist, they influenced me in many ways. They were my childhood, especially that because Motown music was so real, it's not like music now we have in this generation.

Is it hard to separate your work life and personal life?
I suppose it is because these days my schedule is fully booked up and then there's time when you want to do something else it just clashes with my music life, it's really hard when I want to take a break but I guess that wanting to be a singer I need to go through this certain stage. It's difficult to try and get free time; it makes it hard for me to visit my family. It’s even difficult for me to use my phone trying to contact my family and see how they are. Really my life right now is based in the studios, I’m mostly spending my time in the studio recording but then I guess it's for my album. Maybe after my album is released I will hopefully love some free time and just carry on with my personal life. When I get time off I try to spend it wisely.

Will this album have a tour?
Yes there will be a tour for this album but there's a long way to go...for this tour to happen.

Why did you take this career path?
I’ve always loved singing but I wasn’t passionate about becoming a singer until I reached 14, With the music that was out that time I wanted something different because music at that time was on repeat nothing special, so I wished for something different and from then I thought to myself what if I could try to change music and so from then on I started to write my own songs, One day I got signed by Columbia Records and started my journey from there all the way up to where I am now.

Who would you want to work with in the future?
I’d love to work with Adele, her voice is just beautiful and she’s such a great artist, which is passionate with her music. She would definitely be one that I’d love to work with.

A lot of people compare you to Jennifer Hudson, what do you think about that?
Oh really? Well Jennifer is a great singer, she’s very talented, she has a wonderful voice, but then I guess there’s no comparison because we are different, she’s more of a mainstream artist and I am soulful. However I feel honoured because she’s an true amazing real artist.

Where do you see yourself in five years time?
Will you still be singing? That’s a good question, I really haven’t thought about it because I’m so busy making the most of it now and in 5 years time is quite far away but I guess I will still be in this music career, I don’t think I can ever put an end to my singing career, I really love what I’m doing. Hopefully in 5 years time I’ll still be singing.

Anything you would want to say to your amazing fans?
Yes, thank you so much! I love you guys so much, I’m really grateful to have you guys to support me, thank you.

It was a delight talking to Jazmine Sullivan, she’s a gifted person who’s is down to earth. She’s very passionate with her music life. She cherishes everything that she has. This album will be soon to be released. There hasn’t been a confirmation date yet.

Magazine Questionnaire Link&Results&Comments

My magazine questionnaire: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/QGGRCXY

Question 1 I asked my audience who they are interested to see on the front cover. The options were new up coming artist or established artist who already exist. Seven people choose established artist and three choose upcoming artist. This shows that majority of my audience are interested in established artist. So for my magazine my front covers will be on established artist.

Question 2 I wanted to know what certain soul music they listen to so I put four main option on the questionnaire. The most popular answer was Old school R&B, meaning most of my audience listen to old school R&B this could also be because during late 80's to 90's Old school R&B was very popular and they they most likely grew up listening to Old school R&B.

Question 3: I asked how much they would pay for my magazine which will be published every month. I put out the scale price so that my audience would have a choice of how much they would pay. My audience are age 25-35 they would all have a job. The popular price they would pay is between £2.00-£2.99. Thinking about this I would price my magazine £2.99

Question 4: I wanted to know what features are eye catching when they look at a magazine front cover. This will help me to know what features I should focus on so that it will be eye catching to my audience. I asked them to pick two features. The most eye catching feature is the central image and then the title. Looking at all magazine these two would be the most eye catching features.

Question 5: I wanted to know what colours are suitable for them, so I asked what colours would appeal. I put out colours that relates to soul music, suitable colours that goes for soul type. I asked them to pick three because having three colours would make the magazine more appealing. The three popular colours are black, purple and gold.

Question 6: I wanted to show my audience all the title option I have for my soul magazine I wanted their opinion on this, I wanted them to pick which title they would prefer. All these name relates to soul music. The three most popular title that my audience would like is Soul Train, Essence and Heart. For my final decision is that I will name my title soul train.

Question 7: I asked my audience if they would read the magazine online. I asked this because in this generation people use technology and since all these new devices are coming out such as ipad, mini ipad, samsung note pad and others. I see a lot of people use this and they read books on these devices. So to make it easer for my audience they could just go online and read using their devices. Most of my audience would read online.

Question 8: I asked what they would like to see in the magazine and that they should rate the category from 1 being the highest to 6 being the lowest. This would help me because it will tell me on where I should focus on to give what my audience wants.

Magazine Propsoal

Final magazine proposal
The genre of my music magazine is Neo Soul.
My final decision for my magazine title is Soul Train. In my questionnaire I listed four titles; there was an equal vote on three titles which were Soul Train, Essence and Heart. I picked Soul Train because the other titles already exists.

The target audience of my magazine is aimed at 25-35 middle class black women from social group C1; they will fit into the rebel’s life style category because they like to challenge mainstream conventions. I decided to create this particular magazine because there are currently no music magazine aimed at this social group and focusing on this particular genre of music. Also there’s no magazine that promotes this genre in UK, this magazine will be unique and different from other magazine that mostly contain commercial mainstream R&B.
My magazine will be published every month costing £2.99. In my questionnaire I put a scale range of prices, most of my target audience voted for £2.99.

On my magazine questionnaire I asked my audience to rank the content of my magazine in order of preference such as Interviews, Album reviews and more. The highest vote I got is for Interviews therefore my target audience prefers to read about the artist’s interviews mostly. I will choose four top voted categories to be put into my contents page, these will be Interviews, new music, promotional offers and album reviews.
The ideology of this magazine will promote to the audience that black female women don’t have to look sexy like Rihanna, Nicki Minaj. This magazine is to celebrate black women who like to be themselves and are proud of how they look and who they are, unlike other fake black celebrities.

The techniques I will use on my first magazine edition is to have a well known artist on the front cover which will be used in a direct mode of address to engage the reader. I will use graphic features to make the specific puffs stand out and use the colours of my magazine to make it eye popping. In this front cover I will not have my central image super imposed over the title block because I will need people to recognise the magazine title, in the future the magazine will then use super imposed on the front cover.

Draft

The genre of my magazine is Neo Soul. This genre contains soul and contemporary R&B. In this magazine there will be a range of different Soul artist such as Lauryn Hill, Maxwell and Stevie wonder. This magazine will be reviewing on soul artist music, talking about new realises and giving interviews of the artist.

The target audience of my magazine is aimed at 25-35 middle class black women. The reason why I picked this certain audience is because from this age and up, they seem to listen to slow music which is passionate, rather than mainstream pop or metal rock bands, they want to listen to a piece of music that has a meaning and it’s slow, relaxing and smooth.

I decided to create this particular magazine because there are currently no music magazine aimed at this age soul group and getting it more recognised, spreading it worldwide. Also there’s no magazine that promotes this genre in UK, this magazine will be unique and different from other magazine that mostly contain commercial mainstream R&B.

The ideology of this magazine will promote to the audience that black female women don’t have to look sexy like Rihanna, Nicki Minaj. This magazine is to celebrate how black women who like to be themselves and looking natural. To be proud of how they look and who they are unlike other fake black celebrities.

Kerrang Article Page Analysis

In this article the language is formal but not too formal but basic this is because their target audience are males age 15-24, so that they can be able to understand the article clearly. Also, the layout of the article looks formal. This article uses words such as “immediately”, they used immediately instead of instantaneously because they want to use words that male age 15-24 would be able to understand. However quotes from the artist interviews were informal because they were talking in a conversation, such as “being dicks to each other”. This is used to show Green Day personal attitude.

The journalist uses a variety of formal and informal tone in which it address to the fan in a clear way so that they are able to understand the article. This contains words such as “masterpiece, suddenly, brilliant”. The font is formal and again the layout of this article is formal, this suggest that they would read an article that has a mixture of formal and informal words which is laid out in a formal way, rather then having a font is a funny style which makes it unclear for the reader to see. The font of the article is formal small and black which takes half of the page showing it's noticeable and readable. However the title font is very big and bold using black and red colours, it makes it eye catching and dominating.

The article includes four photography images of Green Day’s performance which takes up the whole page with information on the side of the images showing the reader the cast of the show. The captions surrounding the image are placed neatly on the picture. On the other page it is filled with writings half of the page is the full article and the other half is the title with information at the bottom of the title. The article text is laid out in neat columns similar to a newspaper article layout. There are two drop capitals used throughout the article , one of the letter “W” which is used to start up on how it started with “American Idiot” and the second letter is “A” which is for “American Idiot”. This is used because it’s a traditional way of starting a story, it’s dynamic and it makes the article appealing.

The article matches the front cover of the magazine as the colours black, white and red are included in the front cover and the article itself. The images in the article connect to the front cover because the front cover image is Billie Joe behind stage curtains, feeling confident and is ready to perform. The outfit he's wearing for the front cover looks like what he wears when it comes to singing but inside the article he is dressed up in the costume for the show. Showing that the images in the articles are going to be pictures of them performing which direct that not only they have the talent to sing but talent in acting.

In the continuing article, the language used here is informal because it's alphabetical definition of American idiot. The layout used in this looks very informal because it has cartoon pictures, this looks like it's layout for a children’s magazine. I think this is used because it's to make the reader laugh and find it entertaining because the show is called American idiot. On the left side where it say's “So. How's Billie Joe?” this is a small article on Mike Dirnt talking about Billie Joe in rehab. The language used in here is informal because it's mostly contains quotes from his friend Mike showing his personal attitude on the situation. On the right side there’s an interview box where the interviewer asks Mike questions and he replies on his own personal attitude again.

The tone used in this article is a friendly personal tone and a conversational because this journalist is telling the reader what it’s about. “Oh-so epic” showing the reader what they thought and saw of the musical play. The title of this is the same style and font of the first part of the article, it uses red and black colour. This is to show that this is a continuation of the first article.

In this article it contains seven images, two of them are images are of Billie and Mike. The other pictures are cartoon animated pictures this is because they’re character from the musical “American Idiots”. These pictures are located on both of the pages.

There are many different type of graphic used in this article, there are star graphic on the edges of the article to use as a layout, it apply to both pages. The cartoon graphic are caricature from the play, these are to show how they look like. The colour and the structure of the graphic represent the rock genre this is because the colour they used which is purple, purple somehow represent rock. The star patterns having so parts off showing an explosion connect to rock because it shows how powerful rock is The journalist assume that the reader would know who Billie Joe Armstrong and that this musical is based on Green Day’s latest album which is called American idiots.

Rolling Stone Article Analysis

In this article the language is very formal because the target audience of this magazine are aged 25-40 therefore they use formal so that it address the reader as an intelligent reader. Also, the layout of the article is formal. This article uses words such as “dismantles”, they used dismantles instead of break down because they want to show that the reader is bright. However quotes from Adele is informal because she uses her own personal attitude such as “My friends all read gossip shit” and “its bullshit”

The journalist uses a variety of formal tone which addresses to the fan that they’re intelligent and bright. This contains words such as “sobbing, distraught and garnered”. The font is formal and again the layout of this article is formal, this suggest that they would reader to read an article that has formal words which is laid out in a formal way, rather than having a font is a funny style which makes it unclear for the reader to see. The font of the article is formal small and black which takes half of the page showing it's noticeable and readable. However the title font is very big and bold using black and red colours, it makes it eye catching and dominating.

The article includes two photography images of Adele posing and in the studio. The studio image shows that she’s keen with her music and that she’s enthusiastic about it, this picture is a wide shot where it includes Adele, microphone, paper stand and lights. The objects in this picture show that she’s in a recording studio. This represent her as a keen, determine, fierce, passionate woman. The article text is laid out in neat columns similar to a newspaper article layout. There are three drop capitals used throughout the article, one of the letter “I” which is used to start the article of, the other is “A” which refers to Adele. This is used because it’s a traditional way of starting a story, it’s dynamic and it makes the article appealing.

The article matches the front cover of the magazine as the colours black and white is included on the article itself. The image on the article connect to the front cover because the front cover image is a close up on Adele’s face, showing that she wants to show the reader the real her. The colour used is to represent her as a mature and a hardworking person, this connects to the image of her in the studio. The big photo of her is a facial photo to show her beauty and her signature look, she always wear the same makeup look & hair all the time unlike other artist who changes their makeup look all the time.

This article is a mixture of Adele’s career on how she joined in the music career. This tells the reader the life Adele had when she entered this music industry. This shows that Adele is a hard working woman who had to do so much to get where she is now. The layout of this article is written in a formal way, like a newspaper article. The title is written in a big sharp bold writing. There’s quotation from the text which is in big writing this is to attract the reader to read the article.

Title Block Analysis

Title: The title is Billboard; it was originally titled “Billboard advertising” It was a trade paper for the bill posting industry, hence the magazine's name. The meaning of Billboard is a large display of something, e.g. a display of McDonalds, This title also will tell the audience that this magazine is based on mainstream music due to ideology associate of billboards. The title is big and standard in white, with the logo colours in the title which are red, yellow, blue & yellow or they sometime change this is because they want it to connect with each issue and artist/layout of each months issues, but you can’t see the colour red and yellow because Justin Bieber is covering some of the letters, this is called superimposed, this is when a famous artist that is well known  is in the front covering the title, this is because it will attract the audience of this magazine and also the fans on this superstar, because when you look at a magazine you will mostly look at the artist rather than the title, but if it’s a artist that is not known then we will look at the magazine title. The target audience of this magazine would be for any genders aged 18-25 this is because this magazine is based on music and mainstream artist, also for this particular front cover this would appeal for younger females because Justin Bieber is on the front cover and that most female fans will buy this magazine even though they might not usually read this magazine.  The ideology of this magazine is that the title “Billboard” is referring to big poster of Artist and exclusive interviews and stories. It represents the truth, giving the facts to the audience and not lying, having depth interview with mainstream artist. The main selling points of this magazine

Title: The title magazine is Q but the Original title was CUE (as in the sense of cueing a record, ready to play) they changed the name because they didn’t want the magazine to be mistaken for a snooker magazine. The title/logo of this magazine is big and bold. This title is also used as a logo, which will stick into their audience minds and others. The colours used in this magazine are red, black and gold this is because these colours represent and make the magazine be recognised, In this issue they are celebrating “1001 songs” which is written behind Katy Perry this is used because Katy Perry is a world known superstar, this is called superimposed, this is when an image is standing out and the texts are behind the image. The target audience of this magazine is male readers from agued 21-30 due to the verity of music they cover, but for this magazine the audience could be younger because Katy Perry is on the cover and her fans will buy the magazine which they most likely to not be an audience of this magazine but just the star. The ideology of this magazine would to talk about a certain music genre and give interviews on a certain artist. The title “Q” refers to Cue as in a sense of cueing a record, ready to play. This is because the main point of this magazine is to talk about music and the artist, making sure it connects to music. This selling points of this magazine is to give information about music to their audience.

The title of this magazine is Blender, meaning it blends different music genre into one magazine. The title of this magazine is big, bold ad black. The letter n & d of this magazine is covered because of the central image which is Katy Perry who is a worldwide star this is called superimposition. The colour used in this magazine is black and pink, the colour pink symbolise Katy Perry, because she likes the colour pink and feminine colour which most girls like the colour pink, this would attract the female fans of Katy Perry. The target audience of this magazine are males aged 18-24 this is because most of their magazine front cover is females sexually posing, but in this case Katy Perry fans will buy this magazine to support her. The ideology of this magazine is to talk about blending different kind of genre together

Rolling Stone Contents page analysis

On the Rolling Stone contents page there are two sections. The first section is based on one image the second section is the contents section of where they put page numbers and titles. There is one big image on the contents page, this image is a photograph of Amy from Karmin. This image is big because it's to attract the reader about Amy from Karmin, knowing more about her. This image contain captions to show the reader who she is and what the magazine will contain about her, this would appeal to people who don’t know her.

The colours used in this contents page are white, red, black and yellow. These colours are also used on the front cover. These colours make the magazine look simple and clear, they do not want to make it unreadable or else the reader won't be able to read it. Rolling Stone magazine sometime use different colours for different issue but they have a consistent colour scheme which is white, red, black and yellow. Rolling Stone having a colour scheme will make people recognise that this is a Rolling Stone magazine because they use same colour for each issue. The colour represents the genre it’s appropriate and simple, the genre of this magazine is based on mainstream music, liberal politics and popular culture and so this magazine is very formal aimed at older people so therefore they want to use colours that makes the writing look formal.

The contents are split into each category; features; national affairs; rock & roll and more. The reason of this is because it makes easier for the reader to find what pages they want to read and also putting them under each category they would not need to skim through the whole contents they would just need to find the page category. This would be good for people who buy it that wants to read certain article or reviews, this will help them save time.

Rolling Stone have an initial logo on the contents page, it’s located on the left hand top which is written in bold using black and red colour.

The image represent the genre because, it’s using natural lighting on a sensational YouTube star, where most people will recognise who she is, it’s because she’s a mainstream artist. Karmin is about to even get more recognised.

This contents page does not have a conventional order because the category is placed in different orders, for example Rock & Roll category has pages that are apart from each other from page 13, 18 and 24.

Kerrang Contents Page Analysis

On this Kerrang contents page there are three sections. The first section is based on one image the second section is on the editor and the third section is the contents section of where they put page numbers and titles. There are two images on the contents page, one is a picture of a band and the second image is a picture of the editor of Kerrang magazine. The first image is big because it’s to attract the audience about winning a ticket for the “Revival Tour” and a Lee denim jacket. This picture contains a graphic feature and a buzz word with little information at the bottom and the    question for the audience to answer to be able to win the ticket and jacket
The second image on the contents page is a picture of the magazine editor along with a group; with this image it had a letter from the magazine editor himself explaining about the picture behind what actually happened. He also talks about Green Day which is on the main front cover; he talks about the opening night of Green Day’s musical. He tells the audience the page of what he’s talking about so that they can read about the musical article of Green Day and maybe they would be persuade by reading this to go and buy tickets for the musical themselves to go and watch it. At the end of the letter he talks about the Kerrang Tour to close up the letter. This letter is for the Kerrang fans, they are the ones who would read this part the normal Kerrang audience would just be interested about the articles so they would just look at the contents and maybe the contest image.
The colours used in this contents page are red, white, black and yellow. These colours are also used on the front cover. These colours make the magazine look simple and clear, they do not want to make it unreadable or else the reader won't be able to read it. Kerrang magazine use different colours for different issue but they have a consistent colour scheme which is white, black and yellow. Kerrang having a colour scheme will make people recognise that this is a Kerrang magazine because they use same colour for each issue. The colour represents the genre because it’s dark, bold and dominating. Also the rock music is bold so it connects to the colour.
The contents are split into each category; feedback; news; live reviews; posters and more). The reason of this is because it makes easier for the reader to find what pages they want to read and also putting them under each category they would not need to skim through the whole contents they would just need to find the page category. This would be good for people who buy it that wants to read certain article or reviews, this will help them save time.
Kerrang does have a logo their logo is the title. In this content page they use their title on a red banner, like in every Kerrang magazine content page they use the same red banner with their title on top or they sometime use different colour but still have the title on time.
The images represent the genre because it’s in black and white which shows there’s a mystery and dark, this connects with the rock music because rock music is dark and heavy. The bottom pictures with the editor and a band group shows they’re unconventional which relates to rock because rock music is very different; it’s unusual from mainstream music.

Kerrang and Q Magazine front cover analysis
